October Update 2

Nov 04, 9:01am

To all of our supporters,

First I want to thank you for your incredible support for the ASFS Science Lab project.  Many of you are parents, alumni parents, and many of you chose to support this project for other reasons.  I am so grateful for this tremendous support.   As you may know, this project was initiated by ASFS parents, faculty and administration to create the ultimate science classroom environment complete with state-of-the-art technology, eco-friendly building materials, and nature-inspired aesthetics designed to provoke, cultivate, and foster life-long student interest in science.  The features of the new lab will allow our teachers to present the SOL curriculum in an engaging way to foster our student's interest and love for the sciences.

We have successfully completed all components of Phase 1 and 2 of the project, which includes new flooring, dramatically increased storage capacity, new appliances that will expedite clean up and set up for the Science Instructor, new, more manageable lab tables and light weight, colorful stools, a structurally sound fish tank stand and fish tank accessories, color coded paint around the room (and ceiling) to illustrate the different systems active in the room (heat, A/C, electric, water), new teacher work station, darkening, and electronic window coverings to allow for controlled environment.

We plan to complete Phase 3 of the lab by June for the 20th anniversary dedication, and it will include exciting features such as an updated version of Brightlink for the classroom, Makerbot 3D printer, cameras that connect microscopes to IPads, state-of-the-art interface for science education, scaled to size planets hung in distance scale from the ceiling, science-related mural at the front of the room, teacher training, and more.

We look forward to inviting you to the “grand opening” in the Spring of 2015 when we hope the room will be completed and fully stocked with cutting edge, thought provoking equipment for our children!  The new lab will make a difference for the many students who will grace our halls for years to come.

Thank you for your support of ASFS and I look forward to seeing you throughout this special year.

Sincerely,

Mary Begley

Science Classroom Status Update-31 JUL 2014

Jul 31, 7:39am

ASFS Science Classroom Backers:

We hope this email finds you all having a great summer.  We have an update for you and an ask in this email.

First, the update.  Our team has literally spent dozens of hours over the last month doing very detailed planning to help ensure this classroom achieves its full potential.  We are confident the room is going to be nothing short of spectacular.  We have completed the demolition of the classroom.  The floors are removed, all the shelving is gone, the counters have been pulled out, and even the fish have been relocated across the hallway.  Tomorrow, we will begin the rebuild process as we start to relocate electrical, HVAC, and fire extinguisher infrastructure and begin to paint, refloor, and prepare for the millwork.

During the demolition process, we did discover additional work to be done, such as the movement of some of the HVAC work, two rows of windows that were not discovered until we took apart the ceiling, and damage to the fish tank and its supporting framework, to name only a few of the items.  The net result is that our costs for Phases 1 and 2 have increased to approximately $115,000 and we need to raise an initial $5,325 immediately.  We are doing all the contracting through APS and the county requires that all the funds be in the school account before they will release purchase orders.  The additional funding we need now is to cover all our updated Phase 1 and 2 costs.

While everyone on this email update has been so generous to date, we are writing today to ask for your help in raising this $5,325 in the next 24 hours.  We ask that you consider increasing your support by contributing once again. As we have said before, every little bit helps so even small increases to your existing contribution will help.

Know that we are continuing to reach out to corporations, alumni, and parents to achieve our ultimate fundraising goals (approx $150K) are we confident we will raise the money we will need for Phase 3.  All that said, we need fast action over the next 24 hours, and we hope you can help us.

Thank you again for your generosity.

Parents: Craig, Joe, Lisa, Linda, and Mary Ellen alongside ASFS leaders Mary, Stephanie, and Barbara
