Help supportThe 2018 Summer Reading Splashfeaturing author Kate DiCamillo! A collaboration between the Austin ISD Libraries, BookPeople, and the Austin Public Library, the Splash will be an amazing day of author panels and hands-on programming for readers in grades 3-6 focused on the fun of summer reading.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Austin Ed Fund, we will be able to provide a free book to approximately 750 students from Title 1 Schools who attend the event. However, we also need to cover event expenses such as:
printing posters, bookmarks, and signage
renting picnic tables for an outdoor lunch area
bottled water for attendees
The 2018 Summer Reading Splash will take place from 10 am to 3 pm on Saturday, May 19 at the Austin ISD Performing Arts Center. Keynote speaker Kate DiCamillo will open the festival. Almost 20 additional authors will attend and participate in panels, interacive programs, and book signings. Our partner, BookPeople, will hold a district-wide book fair as part of the event, selling books from the featured speakers and panelists. (They will also donate 20% of sales to the Austin ISD Libraries Buford the Book Bus program which gives away free books in the summer to students who need them.)
Why Summer Reading?
We all know that reading is important, but it's not at the top of most kids' "summer fun to-do list." The goal of the Summer Reading Splash (and the whole 5 Book Dive Summer Reading Program) is to help kids discover how fun and rewarding reading can be, and get them excited about reading even when school is out. Students in grades 3 through 6 - the ones who are too old for picture books and too young for teen novels - are particularly vulnerable to a loss of motivation for reading, and that's why the Splash festival has been designed just for them!
(Plus, research shows that reading just five books over the summer can protect students from the drop in reading levels known as the “summer slide” - but don't tell the kids!)
Support Literacy Today!
This is only the first year for the Summer Reading Splash, but the buzz is already building, and we're nearing our fund-raising goal. Please consider jumping in the pool to support literacy and summer reading in Austin. Together, we can make a Splash!
