Teacher Name: Jodie Deinhammer and Sarah Grover
Description and purpose of grant: This grant aims to provide students with opportunities to use wireless sensors to collect data in real-time. We do not currently have sensors for pH or temperature that work well with iPad. These new sensors connect wirelessly with the iPad and allow students to record the pH of solutions and temperatures of liquids and surfaces. We would use them in several of our design labs, where students develop procedures and experiments to test out a hypothesis of their choosing—allowing students to collect accurate, real-time measurements. Digital sensors offer greater precision, reducing error and ensuring consistent results. They also allow for continuous monitoring, such as how the pH of a stomach solution changes over time based on food intake. The ability to store and analyze digitally enhances efficiency, which supports deeper analysis and understanding of complex science content.
Implementation process: Sensors will be purchased from Pasco Science and will last for many years. Students will be able to use them in multiple labs and multiple courses in CHS. They would be available to all students in AP Bio, chemistry (all levels), and AP Environmental Sciences. The sensors detect pH and temperature so they would be useful to large numbers of students.
Items you plan to purchase with grant money
pH Sensors - detect changes in pH in solutions
Temperature sensors - detect the temperature of liquids and surfaces
Charging Station - to keep devices charged
Shipping is typically free with Pasco orders.
Quoted at $2685.10, no shipping
In the event my grant is not fully funded, this is the minimum amount I would need to get started on this project: We could buy 1/2 of the probes and make the groups larger, $1500
