Description and purpose of grant: 

Grant Objectives: This grant will provide hands-on, play-based materials such as LEGO® building sets and social-emotional learning games for learners who receive direct social skills instruction. The LEGO® sets will be used for imaginative play to create and act out social scenarios that encourage communication, problem-solving, and cooperation. Students will practice taking turns, sharing ideas, and expressing emotions in a structured, supportive setting while using cooperative board and card games, whole-body activity games such as Charades or Hedbanz, and teamwork-based games such as Gnomes at Night and Sequence for Kids.

Connection to Campus/District Goals: This project supports Coppell ISD’s mission to educate the whole child by promoting engagement, positive relationships, and personal growth. These materials align with campus goals for building social-emotional skills and communication strategies that help students succeed in both academic and social settings.

Implementation process: The number of learners receiving direct social skills instruction varies each year based on IEP goals. Currently, 10 students participate in small-group lessons focused on building communication, conversation skills, social-emotional awareness, turn-taking, and greetings. At this time, instruction primarily includes videos and a limited number of games. This grant will expand opportunities for structured and interactive learning through cooperative games and imaginative LEGO® play that promote teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. These materials will be used during direct social skills instruction and incorporated into ongoing lessons throughout the year. Because these resources are durable and reusable, they will continue to support students with similar communication and social-emotional needs in future school years.
