Short Description: The Coppell Performance library is in need of updating with performance literature of the 21st century, as well as replacing missing parts of current inventory. With Seven Concert bands, we are short on selection of pieces for community performances and performance assessments.
Teacher Name: Kim Shuttlesworth, Head Band Director
Purpose and Rationale: Coppell High School prides itself in a tradtion of excellence, along with being inclusive, welcoming, and accepting of everyone. That purpose extends to our values as an organization as well. We want to showcase composers from all around the world, bring in new forms of literature to educate the students, and give performances that can be appreciated by all who are a part of Coppell. Expanding our perfomance library will enable more variety to the growing program, which will allow the students to experience more in the end.
Strategy: If given this opportunity, we would begin purchasing new works immediately in order to study and perform. We give 3-4 concerts a year, which is about 21-28 different performances that play roughly 3-4 different pieces of literature. That means that in a given year we may need over 75 pieces of literature that is being performed for the community. Our library has roughly 300 pieces... so that rotation can become limited during a students time. Also, we are limited in certain skill levels of literature, so it can really become a programming challenge.
External Resources: Coppell High School Band Booster organization helps offset the costs of some additional literature because we may not have enough funds from the district. The literature is like a textbook in a class, therefore, the band program uses budget from school mostly. However, school budget is limited to less that $3000 and musical pieces range from $65 for level 1 up to $350 or more for the level 5 and 6 projects.
Evaluation Summary: The Band Directors will be able to check growth through performance assessments internally and externally. We can program these pieces on UIL and a panel of judges will give an evaluation on their work. Also, the Coppell community itself is natural feedback loop because we receive feedback directly or through their students. Coppell High School Band prides itself in being an award winning band.
Estimated Completion Date: The funds will be used as soon as they are available.
