Description and purpose of grant

Every child deserves to learn real-world money skills! However, not every child takes money management courses or has guardians who want to teach them how to develop financial skills. This grant will fund lunchtime and after-school workshops to give Coppell students the opportunity to gain the foundational financial skills to support their financial success during and after high school. A certified Financial Counselor with a proven track record of leading fun, friendly financial literacy sessions will lead the sessions for free. This would be even better for students because students won't need to worry about biased advice pushing them to buy questionable financial products or services as the financial counselor leading the sessions has an ethical and professional duty to give unbiased information and not sell financial products. These sessions will be fun, friendly, and tailored to the specific students who attend each session.

The workshops would involve a series of fun, interactive mini-lessons and immediate learning application by completing activities based on each attendee's financial goals. Topics include applying for a job, bank account basics, avoiding scams, impulse buys, debit/ credit/ secured credit cards, avoiding debt, paying for professional development after college (grants/scholarships, student loans, and work-study), leasing versus buying a car, renting your first apartment/housing, how to budget and save, types of investments, charities, and community giving, and more! They would complete information in their financial journals during the sessions.

Implementation process: Ask counselors about the best days and times to hold these sessions. Keep them short and focused on specific topics. Announce them in the CHS communication outlets (KCBY, posts in Schoology announcements, communicate with my own students, make posters and put them up by water fountains and bathrooms.
