Grade: 10th and 11th
Teacher Name: Irene Hudson
Description and purpose of grant: We are asking for a grant to help build our life skills room for our structured learning students. Our campus goals and values for the special education department are goal-focused and learner-centered. Alot of our students goals are focused on building functional skills such as problem solving, decision making, communication, hygiene, basic cooking and more. Whats most important to me as an Special Education teacher is helping my students gain the skills that will allow him or her to increase self-esteem and lead to more happiness in all areas of their life. I want my students to feel valued and supported in their learning journey. This includes increasing independence at home, at school and in the community. United, we will be the driving force to open unlimited possibilities for all learners.
Implementation process: The great thing about our classroom is that we have two connecting classrooms we can use for our life skills room. We have a big enough space to create clearly defined sections of the room that will help our students navigate to different areas of the room. We have at least 9 students that will utilize this area and the number of students will almost double next year. This room will be available for teachers and students for years to come. We will start with the following areas: hygiene, money skills, cooking, coping with stress, office space(cutting, making copies and filing), social skills, making a bed, laundry (putting clothes in washer, taking them out, putting them in dryer and folding) and resturaunt skills. We will have a very structured schedule such as timers and visuals for transition purposes. I will pre-teach expectations, have a data collection system, a reinforcement system and of course keeping the environment clean and organized.
Items you plan to purchase with grant money: Items that I plan to purchase with the grant money is bathroom and kitchen curtains, kitchen supplies (hot plates, toaster, utensils, airfyer, grill etc), office supplies (safety scissors, copy paper, ink, printer, ruler, filing cabinet etc.) hygiene supplies (wash cloths, towels, tooth brushes, tooth paste, floss etc.), Restaurant supplies (dishes, utensils, paper napkins, broom/dust pan, mop etc), comforter set and pillows, Visual task cards, portable washer and dryer, Visuals, timers.
