If you believe that all children deserve an opportunity to succeed in their chosen field of education or career, and you wish to support students in the underserved populations in this effort, please consider donating to the Murchison fund to set up the AVID Excel program at Murchison. AVID Excel provides opportunities for emerging bilingual students to build vocabulary and literacy skills in order to prepare for the AVID Elective in high school while celebrating language, culture, and biliteracy. The program is geared toward students at the intermediate/advanced level of English. These students are typically in regular classes and do not always have the English needed to succeed in those classes. School becomes a burden, and they may end up dropping out in high school. AVID Excel will strengthen their skills and teach them how to prepare for college.
The Murchison IB Middle Years School is dedicated to providing equitable access to a rigorous curriculum that will assist students in being college and career ready. Our campus has a diverse student population. In addition to the IB programme, students may elect to take the AVID college and career elective course, which provides support to our underserved student populations, so that they can successfully attend a college or university. Next year, we would like to add the AVID Excel program to our curriculum, so that students who need more English language proficiency can achieve that and develop goals for success as an adult.
In addition to various AVID Secondary activities, AVID Excel students participate in:
Quote Analysis
Language Domains: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing
Career Exploration
Critical Reading Skills
Foundations of Language and Word Parts
Summer Bridge Learning Opportunities
In order to offer this program at Murchison, it is required that we send a group of six teachers/administrators to training at the AVID Summer Institute in San Antonio, Texas. The total cost will be around $12,096.00. Our campus does not receive Title 1 funding, funding for campuses with a high percentage of students on free and reduced lunch. Therefore, these students are not receiving services that are normally funded on a Title 1 campus.
Help us ensure that our students become productive members of society and see their dreams become a reality. Donate now.
What a great idea. Good luck
