The Fine Arts program at Blackshear Elementary Fine Arts Academy is focused on providing students the opportunity to discover new talents, build courage and self-worth through the arts. Blackshear is a Title I school and our goal is to give students access to the rich arts community in Austin. Over 70% of our students receive free or reduced lunch and are unable to participate and pay for extra curricular activities. We are home to a diverse student population, with students from Congo, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Mexico, Rwanda, East and West Austin. Through our partnerships with local organizations and community members, our students have access to new opportunities that have been previously out of their reach.
Thanks to Mackenzie Gallaway for telling me about the program. Many years ago I taught at Maplewood School and later worked as an instructional coordinator in AISD. A strong arts program on an elementary school campus is invaluable for students and the entire school atmosphere.
I am a photographer and am excited about the students learning the basic skills that will inspire them to get out there and take pictures.
