Mendez Student Council is seeking donations to provide gift cards to students and families this semester. The primary gift card type will be for pizza, although students and families who cannot accept the pizza gift card due to personal or religious reasons, will be offered a comparable gift card.
Why are we doing this? 2020 has been tough on so many of our students and families. We know that as potential donors, this year has been tough for you too. So you can imagine just how a middle school student must feel trying to learn online or in school with such different challenges this year unlike any other. We know we need a little joy and the holiday season cannot come quickly enough! In lieu of pumpkin spiced lattes or peppermint mochas, we are hoping pizza will bring the joy this semester.
The Student Council will be sponsoring academic and social competitions this semester. The more pizza gift cards we can afford the more incentives we can create for students. This could look like students winning a gift card for being the highest earner on a test, having the highest attendance, or writing a thoughtful essay. It could be awarded at our contactless pick-up events this year as prizes for families who drive through our parad or even just because they were entered into a raffle for attending class this week. Student Council members will decide just how to plan and encourage positive choices this semester.
Will you consider helping us? Instead of that big bag of Halloween candy this year, consider sending a little support to the Mendez Student Council and make a kids day this semester instead, one slice at a time.
I used to be a teacher at Mendez and want to give back to current students.
I taught at Mendez four years and will always be a Maverick. Best to you all. Joy Lozano, M.Ed.
I am inspired by the stories of the children and the good work of the volunteers.
Love the Mendez Mavericks! -Ms Stone
