The Frank Haltiwanger Verbum Sap Sat Scholarship: In honor of his 11 years as HB principal, we are establishing the “Frank Haltiwanger Verbum Sap Sat Scholarship,” to be awarded to the one graduating student each year – beginning with the Class of 2015 – who most exemplifies the values of “Verbum Sap Sat” in their approach to their studies, their classmates and teachers, and life in general.
We cannot think of “Verbum Sap Sat” without thinking of Frank. At every opportunity, Frank invoked and explained “Verbum Sap Sat” to HB students, parents, and visitors. “Verbum Sap Sat” translates to “A Word to the Wise is Sufficient.” This motto captures the principles of HB Woodlawn: self-motivation, self-discipline, and fairness to all.
This scholarship is currently a SURPRISE. It will be presented to Frank at his retirement party on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 (at HB Woodlawn, from 7pm – 9pm). After that, we will enlist Frank’s input to further refine the purpose of this scholarship and the criteria for selecting recipients.
Please help us raise $20,000 by May 26, 2015 to form the seed of the Frank Haltiwanger Verbum Sap Sat Scholarship Fund! We will need this much in order to generate a self-renewing scholarship of an amount that will be meaningful to winners, given today’s tuition costs. You can donate online here by selecting a giving level at the right, or by selecting the GIVE button and entering your preferred donation amount.
You can also send a check written to HB Woodlawn, with “Frank’s Scholarship” in the memo line, to:
And please keep this as a surprise and do NOT tell Frank!!!
HBW means a lot to me and so does Frank. It was a joy working with him and I think that this scholarship is a wonderful way to show how much Frank means to such a wonderful school and student body.
I'm an HBW alum and was a student of Frank's - and am delighted to recognize his great work!
In honor of Ray, in memory of Mary, and in appreciation of Frank for continuing their legacy and maintaining H-B's ideals.
Frank has been the heart of HB
Frank is awesome and his contributions to the HB Woodlawm program should be recognized in perpetuity.
